Ozma of Oz by L. Frank BaumMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I love the Oz books. I mean this one says, “…at a third ring he screamed in a fury, “Hippikaloric!” which must be a dreadful word because we don’t know what it means.” Really it’s lines like that that make books enjoyable.
There is a movie called Return to Oz that is based on this book. The movie is slightly terrifying, not flying monkeys scary, but still, kind of freaky. I would recommend reading the book to get a real sense of the characters. If you want to watch the movie after, go ahead.
There are many characters new and old alike. One of my favorites is the Hungry Tiger, who really just wants to eat, and is sad that he can’t. Well, at least can’t eat as much as he wants. When you think about it, we can all relate to him at points in our lives.
The Nome King is a great villain. The way he deals with others isn’t violent, but something that is appropriate for the reader age targeted. I’ve been reading this series for most of my life, and have yet to get bored.
