Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillain by Richard RobertsMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book and series takes place in a world where superheroes and villains exist. However, this is not their story. This is the story of the next generation. The children of these superheroes are just learning if they have powers or not, and for one Penelope Akk, things get a little out of control.
Penelope and her best friends Claire and Ray use their newfound powers, if they have them, and Penny’s inventions to become something their parents never saw coming, villains. True, they didn’t set out to become that, but the superhero world doesn’t care what you meant to do.
While Penny’s parents and other superheroes scramble to figure out who these new villains are, the kids generally wreak havoc in their school and town. As they start to get noticed by bigger villains, their escapades increase in scale, and their name, The Inscrutable Machine, becomes well known on both sides.
As I read, I sat there wondering how Penny’s parents could miss all the signs pointing to their daughter being this new threat, but I think I get it. Most children of heroes have powers that slowly appear, and Penny never showed her parents everything she created. They didn’t realize she was an exception to the rule. I guess even for superheroes, it’s easier to believe what your children tell you rather than think they could be capable of something horrid. Claire’s mom on the other hand cracks me up. She is the most laid back parent ever. She isn’t confused as to who the new villains are, she is fully aware and feeding them snacks.
All in all, a good book with all new heroes and villains.
