Jasper John Dooley: Left Behind by Caroline AddersonMy rating: 2 of 5 stars
The Jasper John Dooley series is one that I think works well for its target audience, but as an adult, I have to admit, I was getting kind of annoyed with the main character. I have to keep reminding myself that he is a very young child.
For Jasper, having his grandmother go on a cruise and leave him behind is earth shattering. He loves his grandma and is used to spending a lot of time with her. As an adult, it’s hard for me to understand why he is struggling as much as he is. Thinking back on when I was a kid, I get it. Kids find comfort in the routine. Changes are difficult for adults, let alone first graders.
The best part of the book for me, was Jasper’s babysitter. That girl knocked it out of the park. She found a way to make Jasper feel better about the whole situation.
