The Afterlife Academy by Frank L. ColeMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I can’t get over the fact that Walter was struck by lightning. Out of all the ways for a kid to go. I guess it would end up being a lot more serious if it had been something else.
I have to admit, if I had Walter stuck in my head trying to tell me what to do, I think I would go insane. That kid has his own way of looking at the world, and it isn’t necessarily the safest or sanest. I think it works for Charlie though. He is so obsessed with the otherworldly, that while Walter is annoying, he just kind of rolls with it.
This book is a mix of all sorts of things. You have good verses evil, a kid that goes on a journey of self discovery, mystery, monsters, battles, all sorts of stuff. While it is a lot, I think that makes it more enjoyable for a wide range of readers. I personally liked the mystery and the fact that board games were considered a punishment.
For kids that are maybe not completely ready for YA, but ready to move so something with a little more depth, this is a great option.
