How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida CowellMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
After reading this book, I really want to watch the movie again. I know there are a lot of differences between the two, but I can’t remember if some great parts of the book are in the movie. If I remember correctly, the dragon language is never spoken, which is a shame, I think that was a great way to show just how different Hiccup is from the others in his village.
Having the dragon language as part of the book allowed all of the dragons to have personalities beyond their actions. The reader gets the opportunity to actually know what the dragons are thinking.
The book the kids are told to read on training their dragons cracked me up, especially since the adults refer back to it when things start getting difficult. I’m surprised there were not major accidents with dragons with the training and advice everyone was getting. It wasn’t just the dragons that had me wondering about the survival of the villages in the area. It seemed like the logic they used for the way things were ran would end up with the population dying out within a few generations. I’m glad common sense seemed to prevail in the end. I was worried there for a little while.
