How Mirka Got Her Sword is a good beginning to a series. My only real issue was the fact that I lack background knowledge that I’m sure would have helped explain some of the cultural references. I was able to pick up on most of them, I think, but I’m sure some things went right over my head. Mirka lives in an Orthodox Jewish community where some of the kids don’t even know what a pig looks like or that it is in fact a real animal. That fact did add to the story, but it made it difficult to really visualize it.
There was a mysterious undertone to some of the characters, and I found myself wondering what was really going on and who was telling the truth. I have to admit, Mirka’s step mother kind of gave me the chills. She has to be hiding something.
I’m glad this is the first book in a series, because the characters are being given a chance to really develop and not have out in the open from the beginning.
