Death by Cliché 3: Boldfinger by Bob DefendiMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I’m really hoping there is a fourth book coming out, because Mr. Defendi, I have questions.
For me, this series keeps getting better. I think the first book was hard for me to understand because I don’t play the types of games these books are based on, so a lot of things went over my head. Three books in, and the story isn’t focused as much on the game play, which takes away most of my confusion.
The chapter openings crack me up. They are a story unto themselves, and I hope nobody ever skips them. I especially liked the addition of Candice who while seemingly out of place, just plays into the flow of game and reality mixing. Plus, it was just fun having the narrator freak out for a few chapters.
The Cat of Darkness side story sometimes seemed random, but it had its purpose in the end, and it was always great when one of the characters would notice the animals doing their training exercises. You almost forget that they are in the same place as the humans until someone comments on how strange the cat is acting, or the fact that all the animals seem to be moving in formation. Each animal has its own personality, which I appreciate. It made them more than just one-dimensional side characters.
I will admit, the whole Bil/Bill thing had me totally confused until the end when it was explained. I kept wondering if I was missing something. Also Damico joining the revolution. I kind of get it, but still in the back of my head it doesn’t make complete sense. I appreciate the multiple times characters tried to explain it, I’m not as confused as I would have been.
Now, I’m just going to wait for another book in this series to hopefully come out, because questions, I have them. They need answers.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
