Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos HernandezMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I don’t know what I was expecting from this book, but this was a wild ride from start to finish. I appreciate that it wasn’t just some book where the kids go on some adventure, but the kids are dealing with real life issues that are not mentioned in books geared toward this age range very often. The kids all learned from each other and found ways to help in the difficult moments, except for Gladis, she needs a special kind of help.
The concept behind the story seems so plausible, that it makes you wonder if something like this is actually possible.
There were only a couple things that didn’t really work for me with this book. I had a hard time keeping all of the Gabi dads straight. There were a lot of them, and some of them had really long names that I started abbreviating after a while. Also, there were two or so moments in the book that didn’t seem to have anything to do with the story and ended up slowing the flow for a while. That’s really it though. I usually have a problem keeping names of side characters straight, so that’s just a me thing.
