Five Feet Apart by Rachael LippincottMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
This book has a lot going on and a romance that is not as lovey-dovey as a lot of YA books have. There were parts that I felt I didn’t completely understand because of my limited knowledge of CF. The book does a good job of giving a general explanation, but I still was left with questions. I did read the book right when the movie came out, and avoided seeing it to keep my opinions of the story based solely on the book. I am tempted to go watch the movie now and then read the book again to see if my thoughts change.
As mentioned before, there is a little romance, but it seems more stable to me. I’m not sure if that makes sense, but it seemed like the characters while they did like each other, were also concerned about the others mental and physical well-being, which is not something you see portrayed in really any literary couple. I’m sure there are others that have those characteristics, I just tend to shy away from books with a lot of romance, so I have missed them.
Having the relationship about more than the usual, it really gave the characters a chance to grow and show how being around each other affected their lives.
The one issue I really had was with the parents. Stella’s seemed to give her way too much control for a minor, and Will’s mother was so in control it was disturbing. I’m sure there are more parents like Will’s than Stella’s but I would have liked to see a middle ground.
