Island of Dragons by Lisa McMannMy rating: 2 of 5 stars
I feel like the very first thing I should do in this review is explain my rating. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the Unwanteds series, it’s just the way this one ended. I know there is a second series based on the world created here, but I don’t want to feel like I have to read the next series in order to tie up loose ends in the one I am already reading. I really would have liked things to be finished in this book and then have the other series start off with a whole new situation. Besides that, I liked the book and the series. I wanted them to figure out where they had come from, since I am guessing it was from our world and the older generation had ended up there due to various circumstances, but my guess is that is going to be covered in the other series.
I did get a little annoyed with Alex and Aaron. Alex, because he just kept getting caught up on the fact that his brother was a natural at magic and was able to do things he couldn’t, and Aaron, because he kept having to battle with the desire to rule everything. I mean, I get it, they are twins and competitive and are used to being the best and above everyone in the things they do, but there was just so much else going on, that I just wanted to scream at them to get a hold of themselves and focus on the bigger picture.
I think Henry is the real hero of this story. He was willing to risk his life in order to save the giant crab. True, he missed most of what was going on in Artimé, but he was on his own journey, one where there was no one else there to help him when things became dangerous. Well, I guess there was Spike, but there were no humans. He really has the biggest heart of any of the characters, and I wish there had been more about him in the series.
The time Alex and Aaron spent on the island of dragons was also great. I liked the fact that the sea dragon had some back story that was added. It made her a more well-rounded character that could be related to.
